EQOQI Lab contribution at PIERS 2026 in Suzhou, China this week:
Yan He is presenting our work, “Broadband Achromatic Metalens for the Short-wave Infrared”.
The work explores achromatic metalens design for the short-wave infrared, supporting our broader effort on compact photonic devices for sensing and quantum technologies.

Congratulations to Yan on her first paper!

Our paper has been published today in Scientific Reports.

This work was led by PhD student Yan He (her first paper🥳) and investigates broadband achromatic metalenses for the short-wave infrared (SWIR) region.

The study focuses on the important 1.8-2.3 μm band, relevant to quantum sensing, molecular spectroscopy, and free-space optical and quantum communications. Using a CaF₂-substrate metalens with silicon nanostructures, the work shows how chromatic aberration can be strongly suppressed across this broad SWIR window, while also shedding light on the nature of depolarisation in metasurface devices.

Hala and Yan at UK Semiconductors 2026

Yan He and Hala Aloufi are presenting their research at UK Semiconductors 2026, hosted by Sheffield Hallam University with the National Epitaxy Facility.

Yan will present a poster on metasurface design for the mid-infrared. Hala will present her work on nanowire assemblies for next-generation photonic sensing, developed with her co-supervisor in the School of Engineering, Dr Abdullah Al-Khalidi.

Good to see EQOQI group research contributing to the wider UK semiconductor and photonics community.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer

July 2026 🎉: Dr Adetunmise Dada has been promoted to Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Optics and Quantum Technology at the University of Glasgow, effective 1 August 2026.

The promotion recognises his work in quantum photonics, teaching, research supervision and the continued development of the EQOQI Lab.

Quantum music at Glasgow Science Festival

June 2026 🎶: Dr Adetunmise Dada and singer-songwriter Maaike Siegerist brought quantum science and music together at the Glasgow Science Festival.

The event at the University of Glasgow Advanced Research Centre featured quantum-inspired songs, discussion of future quantum technologies and questions from the public.

Reuben Harris returns for a second summer internship

We are pleased to welcome Mr Reuben Harris back to the EQOQI Lab in June for another summer internship.

Reuben, an MSci Physics student, previously joined the lab as a Summer Intern in 2025, working on the development and testing of an entanglement generation setup. His project also involved implementing measurements to explore the feasibility of the BBM92 quantum key distribution protocol.

During his internship, Reuben has been building experience at the intersection of quantum optics, quantum information, and experimental physics. We are delighted to have him return in 2026 to continue contributing to our activities.

Photonics Seminar at the University of St Andrews

Dr Adetunmise Dada gave the Photonics Seminar at the University of St Andrews today, speaking on engineering quantum light for scalable quantum information technologies, from single photons and entanglement to quantum measurement design.

The visit also provided valuable discussion around current challenges in quantum photonics and how measurement-engineered approaches can support future quantum information platforms. Many thanks to Graham Bruce, George Dwapanyin, and colleagues in the School of Physics and Astronomy for the invitation, warm hospitality, and thoughtful discussions.

New Manuscript Preprint💫

Congratulations to Yan He on her first manuscript preprint on arXiv, co-authored with Dr Adetunmise Dada.

The manuscript, titled “Broadband Achromatic Metalens for the Short-Wave Infrared,” explores the design of a broadband achromatic metalens for applications in the short-wave infrared region.

BQIT Poster Prize for Jes

Congratulations to our PhD Student, Jesvita Menezes, on winning one of the poster prizes at the Bristol Quantum Information Technologies Workshop (BQIT) 🎉

Jes presented her poster at BQIT:26 the Bristol Quantum Information Technologies Workshop, an annual three-day meeting that brings together leading researchers and industry partners across quantum science and technology.

Abi Returns to EQOQI!

We are very happy to welcome Abi back to the EQOQI Lab. Abi first worked with us on a project in 2022, and now returns as an MPhil researcher. It is always good when a former student comes back, it usually means we did not scare them away completely.
